Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's nuclear safety and security program, protecting people and the environment from radiation. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains international standards for radiation protection, waste safety, and transport safety. The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section specifically manages an international program for protecting individuals from radiation exposure and provides technical services for IAEA staff and experts.
Job Purpose
As the manager and team leader of the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section, reporting to the Division Director, this role is pivotal in initiating, developing, and implementing the IAEA's policies and programs. This includes overseeing radiation protection for patients and workers, as well as the IAEA's internal Radiation Safety Technical Services, ensuring their alignment with regulations. The Section Head directs the Section's global activities to guarantee the program's effectiveness and is responsible for managing the Section's financial and human resources, driving strategic initiatives and fostering international cooperation in radiation safety.
Responsibilities
The Section Head will plan, develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise all Section activities, providing strong technical and managerial leadership. This includes leading the development, review, and publication of materials related to general radiation protection, patient and worker radiological protection, and the IAEA's Radiation Safety Technical Services. Key responsibilities involve analyzing information to enhance the IAEA's radiation safety program and developing sustainable strategies for technical services. The role also entails leading efforts to support Member States in applying safety standards, providing technical support to IAEA programs, and contributing to initiatives that promote coherence and synergy across related work areas.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of experience in radiation safety is required, with at least eight years in a managerial capacity focused on standard setting. Broad field experience and proven experience managing professional and support staff are essential. Extensive international experience in developing and applying safety standards is also necessary.
