Organizational Context
The Division of Energy Planning, Information and Knowledge Management supports Member States in energy and nuclear power planning, knowledge management, and information provision. The Planning and Economic Studies Section specifically enhances national capacities for energy system development, investment planning, and policy formulation, while also improving understanding of nuclear energy's role in climate change mitigation and sustainable energy development.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the IAEA's initiative in integrating nuclear energy into emerging low-carbon financing mechanisms and carbon market frameworks. The role will involve analytical and technical contributions to developing methodologies, regulatory approaches, and instruments that facilitate nuclear technologies' participation in carbon markets, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, sustainable taxonomies, and energy attribute certificate systems. The internship offers practical experience at the intersection of law, policy, finance, and energy systems, focusing on nuclear energy's recognition within global and regional transition support mechanisms.
Responsibilities
The intern will support analytical work on incorporating nuclear energy into various carbon market mechanisms, including compliance and voluntary markets. This involves contributing to research on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, analyzing regulatory and institutional developments, and identifying opportunities for nuclear participation in cooperative arrangements. The role includes assisting in the review and comparison of sustainable finance taxonomies, assessing nuclear energy's eligibility and treatment. Additionally, the intern will monitor policy developments related to low-carbon financing, carbon accounting, and market infrastructure relevant to nuclear energy. Responsibilities also encompass preparing technical summaries, supporting the organization of workshops, and providing general analytical and administrative support to ongoing initiatives.
