Organizational Context

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's nuclear safety and security program, protecting people and the environment from radiation. The Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) aims to maintain high safety standards for nuclear installations globally, establishing and applying safety standards through various means, including technical cooperation and safety review services.

Job Purpose

The Section Head, reporting to the Division Director, leads the External Events Safety Section. This role involves initiating, developing, and implementing the IAEA's policy and program to enhance nuclear installation safety through proper site selection, installation design, systems design, and regulatory practices. The Section Head ensures the efficacy of the IAEA's global program in this area and manages the section's financial and human resources, providing technical and managerial leadership.

Responsibilities

The Section Head is responsible for planning, initiating, developing, implementing, guiding, coordinating, and supervising the activities of the External Events Safety Section. This includes providing technical and managerial leadership in areas such as site selection and evaluation processes for nuclear installations, seismic safety, protection against external natural and human-induced events, and design safety. The role also involves collecting and disseminating lessons learned from extreme external events, managing the development and publication of safety standards, and leading complex safety review missions.

Work Experience

A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in nuclear applications, site selection and evaluation, and the design and protection of nuclear installations against external events is required. At least five years must be in a senior or middle management role within industry, government, or regulatory settings.
