Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's global efforts in nuclear safety and security, protecting people and the environment from radiation. The Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) focuses on maintaining high safety standards for nuclear installations worldwide, from design through operation, by establishing and applying safety standards and providing review services.
Job Purpose
The Section Head manages and leads the Safety Assessment Section, reporting to the Division Director. This role is responsible for developing and implementing the IAEA's policy and programme concerning the safety assessment of nuclear installations, with a specific focus on design against external and internal hazards. The Section Head ensures the global efficacy and efficiency of the IAEA's programme in this area, leading the Section's activities and managing its financial and human resources to achieve these objectives.
Responsibilities
The Section Head is responsible for planning, initiating, developing, implementing, guiding, coordinating, and supervising the activities of the Safety Assessment Section. This includes providing technical and managerial leadership to enhance Member States' capabilities in applying IAEA safety standards through safety assessment review services covering probabilistic assessments, accident management, design safety, and generic reactor safety. The role also involves strengthening Member States' self-assessment procedures for compliance with safety standards and coordinating support for education, training, and research projects to build technical skills.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in safety assessments and/or nuclear applications is required, with at least five years in a senior or middle management role. Demonstrated international experience, including involvement with IAEA safety standards, and experience in cross-functional environments are also necessary.
