Technical Lead (Fast Reactor Technology Development)
Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) fosters the safe and efficient use of nuclear power, supporting Member States in improving nuclear power plants, fuel cycles, and waste management. It also drives innovation, develops national energy planning capabilities, and advances science through research reactors. The Division of Nuclear Power, including the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section, provides essential engineering, technological, and management support, promoting international collaboration on advanced reactor technologies and fusion facilities.
Job Purpose
As a Technical Lead within the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section, this role is responsible for managing, coordinating, and supervising the IAEA's projects focused on fast reactor and fuel technology, as well as accelerator-driven systems. Operating under the guidance of the Section Head and the Director, the position plays a crucial part in advancing innovative nuclear solutions. The role involves overseeing project implementation, ensuring alignment with Member States' needs, and contributing to the IAEA's standing in the global scientific community through expert contributions and collaborative efforts.
Responsibilities
The Technical Lead will plan, direct, coordinate, and monitor projects related to innovative fast reactor and fuel technology development and deployment, focusing on improvements in economics, performance, and safety. This includes guiding nuclear research and technology development, ensuring Member States' compliance with IAEA standards, and providing specialized technical input to cooperation projects. The role involves evaluating proposals, developing work plans, and supporting training initiatives. Additionally, the Technical Lead will organize scientific meetings, serve as scientific secretary, and contribute to the preparation and editing of scientific publications. Representing the IAEA at national and international forums and fostering collaborations with scientists and organizations are key aspects of ensuring the IAEA's continued recognition in the scientific community.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of relevant professional experience in nuclear power, design, and research and development, with a preference for experience in fast reactor technology and at the international level. Comprehensive experience in managing scientific projects is essential. Experience within a national or international nuclear organization is desirable.
Skills
Expertise in Nuclear Engineering and Technology, including planning and supervising fast reactor and subcritical fast neutron systems. Strong Project Management skills for developing and evaluating research and technical projects. Deep knowledge of technical and safety features of advanced fast spectrum systems, including fast spectrum SMRs. Excellent communication, achieving results, teamwork, planning, judgement/decision making, partnership building, and technical/scientific credibility are essential.
