Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's global program to protect people and the environment from radiation, responding to Member States' needs. The Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) aims to maintain high safety standards for nuclear installations worldwide, establishing and applying safety standards through various support mechanisms.
Job Purpose
The Nuclear Safety Officer, reporting to the Section Head, is responsible for planning and coordinating projects that support the Division's programs and services. The role focuses on strengthening nuclear installation safety through guidance on site selection, design, regulatory policies, and operating practices. This involves contributing to the development and implementation of activities, serving as a technical expert for meetings and consultancies, leading safety review missions, and managing technical cooperation projects.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include leading expert projects to develop, implement, and evaluate safety standards. The role involves providing Member States with advice and assistance on applying safety assessment methodologies and standards, including organizing peer review missions to assess regulatory effectiveness and develop action plans. Additionally, the officer will advise on reviews of operating organization management systems, safety culture, human resources, and technical capacity, participating as an expert advisor. The position also entails organizing and managing capacity-building projects, such as education and training initiatives at national, regional, and international levels.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of relevant experience is required, with at least five years at the international level. This includes experience in applying nuclear safety principles and advanced techniques, organizing and leading technical meetings and missions, and drafting technical publications. International project experience is an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in planning and organizing work, clear and concise communication, achieving results, and exercising sound judgment. Ability to build partnerships and maintain technical/scientific credibility according to international standards. Specific expertise in Human and Organizational Factors, Leadership for Safety, Nuclear Standards Development and Application, and Safety Assessment of Nuclear Facilities is essential.
