Organizational Context
The Department of Safeguards operates as the IAEA's global nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. It develops and implements safeguards to ensure nuclear material is not diverted for peaceful purposes and that no undeclared nuclear activities occur. This role is situated within the Toronto Regional Office, supporting these critical international efforts.
Job Purpose
The Systems Electronic Technician in the Toronto Regional Office is responsible for maintaining the operational readiness of safeguards equipment at Canadian nuclear facilities and within the office's portable equipment store. The role provides essential technical support to nuclear safeguards inspectors and the Division of Technical and Scientific Services (SGTS). The incumbent will also contribute to equipment modification and development as needed. This position is crucial for ensuring the effective functioning of safeguards equipment and supporting the IAEA's mandate to verify peaceful nuclear activities.
Responsibilities
The Systems Electronic Technician will assemble, install, service, and maintain unattended radiation monitoring systems (UMS) and surveillance safeguards systems at nuclear facilities. Responsibilities include calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting portable non-destructive analysis (NDA) equipment. The technician will coordinate infield activities with facility counterparts, manage equipment inventory, conduct procurement, and oversee shipping and write-offs, maintaining accurate records and database updates. Additionally, the role involves preparing technical reports, performing administrative tasks related to equipment management, and providing technical support to inspectors and SGTS. Work may involve exposure to radioactive materials, requiring adherence to safety regulations and health monitoring.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of seven years of relevant working experience in electronics. Demonstrated experience in installing, testing, and troubleshooting electronic systems, electrical instrumentation, and network-based systems is essential. Experience within nuclear facilities or radiation-controlled environments, along with basic knowledge of international safeguards, is considered an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in electronics, system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Experience with unattended radiation monitoring systems (UMS), surveillance safeguards systems, and portable non-destructive analysis (NDA) equipment. Skills in inventory management, procurement, and technical reporting. Ability to coordinate with facility counterparts and provide technical support. Competencies include achieving results, client orientation, judgement/decision making, and technical/scientific credibility.
