IAEA
NAPC-Atomic and Molecular Data Unit
Scientific Data Manager
Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, within the IAEA, focuses on enhancing Member States' capacity to meet human needs and manage environments using nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences supports research and development in nuclear sciences, including nuclear and atomic data. The Nuclear Data Section (NDS) specifically generates and maintains high-quality nuclear and atomic databases, disseminating them globally via its website.
Job Purpose
The Scientific Data Manager is responsible for the computer-scientific aspects of nuclear and atomic data libraries maintained by the Nuclear Data Section, encompassing data analysis, formatting, and dissemination. This role involves close collaboration with NDS staff on database processing and dissemination, reporting to the Section Head. Key duties include setting up, maintaining, and updating the Section's Linux/MacOs-based computational and dissemination servers, managing operating systems, scientific software, and web infrastructure. The manager ensures that the Section's IT infrastructure adheres to Agency security rules and has adequate backup systems, working in conjunction with other IT staff and the IAEA's MTIT division.
Responsibilities
The role involves developing innovative data streaming methods for visualization, atomic/nuclear data processing, software development, and web dissemination. Responsibilities include coordinating and monitoring the Section's servers, maintaining and upgrading scientific software across all platforms, and developing new approaches for data dissemination and computational networks. This includes designing new web pages and tools, optimizing servers for faster calculations, and continuously seeking process improvements. The manager will guide Member States' counterparts and NDS staff in novel data dissemination techniques, provide system support for software and databases on the computer cluster, and ensure the availability of diagnostics and usage statistics. Additionally, the role supports other Data Centres and Member State users by providing scientific software and database support, and assists IAEA staff in developing and maintaining nuclear/atomic databases and web services.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of seven years of experience in scientific, commercial, national, or international organizations, focusing on the design and development of complex computational infrastructures for scientific computing and data dissemination. Experience with Linux maintenance, web infrastructure, secure coding techniques, information security, database design, interface development, scientific databases, and scientific simulations is essential.
