Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's nuclear safety and security program, protecting people and the environment from radiation. The Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) aims to maintain high safety standards for global nuclear installations. This role sits within the External Events Safety Section, focusing on site selection, hazard assessment, and regulatory practices to enhance installation safety.
Job Purpose
The Senior Nuclear Safety Officer (Nuclear Site Safety) plays a crucial role in advancing nuclear installation safety by contributing to program planning, integrating projects, and coordinating a portfolio focused on hazard assessment and site-related regulatory practices. This position supports the Division's objectives by ensuring proper site selection, qualification, and hazard monitoring, ultimately aiming to improve the overall safety of nuclear installations worldwide through expert guidance and program development.
Responsibilities
This role involves organizing and leading expert teams to enhance site safety standards and their implementation, defining how these standards are developed, applied, and evaluated. The incumbent will coordinate IAEA activities concerning site selection, evaluation, and hazard review. This includes gathering Member State experiences, developing projects, and organizing events to strengthen nuclear safety effectiveness. Additionally, the position requires consulting with Member States to plan and implement safety reviews and capacity-building programs, identifying information needs for nuclear safety systems, and providing expertise for incident emergency systems.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of experience is required, including five years at a senior level and at least four years at the international level. This experience must encompass site selection, site evaluation, and hazard assessment for natural and human-induced events, along with applying nuclear safety principles and IAEA standards.
Skills
Expertise in nuclear installations against external hazards, including site selection and assessment processes. Knowledge of safety assessment of nuclear facilities and regulatory review processes. Project management and leadership capabilities. Ability to draft technical reports and guidelines. Excellent communication, teamwork, planning, and organizational skills. Strong judgment and decision-making abilities, with a focus on partnership building and technical/scientific credibility.
