Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, within the IAEA, focuses on "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection." It supports Member States in areas like food, agriculture, health, water, and environment using nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre specifically aids in improving food security and sustainable agriculture, comprising five specialized sections, including Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition.
Job Purpose
The Section Head leads the Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition (SWMCN) Section and its Laboratory, ensuring their activities align with the sub-programme's goals. This involves developing and implementing improved soil, water, and crop nutrient management techniques using nuclear and related methods. The role aims to enhance sustainable agricultural systems resilient to climate change, improve soil carbon and water storage, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and remediate degraded or contaminated agricultural land, contributing to global food security and environmental protection.
Responsibilities
The Section Head is responsible for managing the Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition Section, providing leadership, guidance, and setting performance standards for staff. They ensure coordination and transparency with stakeholders and contribute to the strategic direction of the Joint FAO/IAEA Programme. This includes developing the sub-programme's budget, goals, and work plan, and monitoring outputs. The role involves leading the development, adaptation, and validation of nuclear and related techniques for improved soil, water, and crop nutrient management. Additionally, the Section Head provides scientific and technical input for policy and standards development within the Joint FAO/IAEA Programme and to other international bodies.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of working experience is required in research and development focused on soil-plant-water interactions for sustainable agriculture. Experience in leading teams, managing resources, programme planning, and budgeting is essential. Expertise in developing soil-plant-water management strategies, monitoring land/water contamination, and applying nuclear techniques is also necessary.
