Organizational Context
The Department of Safeguards serves as the IAEA's global nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. This role is integral to that mission.
Job Purpose
This role contributes to the IAEA's nuclear verification mission by collecting, processing, and analyzing open-source information. The analyst will consolidate this data with other available information within the Department of Safeguards. These analyses are crucial for the State evaluation process and the preparation of field activities, directly supporting the department's objective of ensuring nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The position involves close collaboration with senior analysts and section heads to enhance the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of safeguards.
Responsibilities
The Safeguards Information Analyst will participate in State Evaluation Groups, contributing to the evaluation process by identifying, processing, and assessing the quality and reliability of safeguards-relevant information, including open-source data, nuclear material accounting, satellite imagery, and environmental sampling. The role involves conducting analyses of open-source information pertinent to the verification mission in assigned states, drawing from scientific, technical, nuclear trade, and procurement data. Responsibilities also include assisting in the evaluation of State declarations, researching identified issues, documenting findings in analytical reports, and ensuring timely communication of results to relevant departments.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in nuclear non-proliferation or safeguards information collection and analysis, or in nuclear research related to non-proliferation issues, is required. Experience with information collection, processing, and analysis techniques, including advanced text retrieval and databases, is essential.
