Senior Safeguards Analyst (Approaches)
Organizational Context
The Department of Safeguards functions as the IAEA's global nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. It plays a crucial role in developing and implementing safeguards to ensure that declared nuclear material remains for peaceful purposes and that no undeclared nuclear activities or materials exist within a State.
Job Purpose
The Senior Safeguards Analyst is responsible for developing and evaluating novel safeguards concepts and approaches. This role involves supporting operational divisions in designing and implementing state-level strategies, coordinating the creation of tools to enhance safeguards implementation, managing Member State Support Programme tasks, and preparing key documents for departmental and international review. The analyst contributes significantly to the effectiveness and efficiency of the IAEA's safeguards mandate.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include identifying safeguards needs and managing programs to address them. The analyst will develop, analyze, and document new or improved technical safeguards concepts and approaches. This involves providing technical evaluations of state-level safeguards strategies and documents to ensure their effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with IAEA policies. The role also requires effective planning and coordination of technical meetings, producing accurate summaries, and potentially supervising the work of other safeguards analysts. Additionally, the incumbent will provide technical expertise for safeguards inspections and field activities, with awareness of potential exposure to radioactive materials and adherence to safety regulations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of experience in the nuclear field is required, including expertise in systems analysis and the development and evaluation of nuclear safeguards concepts and methods. Experience in organizing and conducting technical meetings and working groups is also necessary.
Skills
Proficiency in planning and organizing work, clear and concise communication, achieving results through initiative, sound judgment and decision-making, resilience under pressure, and maintaining technical/scientific credibility are essential.
