Fishery Officer
Organizational Context
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, addresses the economic, social, institutional, governance, and policy aspects of fisheries and aquaculture. It focuses on human well-being, food security, poverty reduction, post-harvest utilization, marketing, trade, environmental protection, and the well-being of fishing communities. The Division also manages and conserves aquatic resources, promotes responsible fisheries, and develops fisheries technology. The Global Processes and Institutions Team (NFIPI) coordinates cross-divisional activities, supports the Committee for Fisheries, and engages in UN and global policy processes.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will support the NFIPI team and NFI directorate by contributing to divisional support activities, including providing technical input and coordinating NFI's contributions to relevant UN and global policy processes. This role involves supporting NFI's engagement in UN fora, global initiatives, youth-related work, the FAO World Food Forum, and other high-level events. Key results include research, technical analysis, and project-related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products, and services. The position requires researching, analyzing, and disseminating technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology-related data and policy issues in fisheries and aquaculture.
Responsibilities
The Fishery Officer will research, analyze, and provide access to data and information on fisheries and aquaculture, including technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology-related aspects, as well as policy issues, to support program delivery. Responsibilities include producing technical data, statistics, information, and reports, and contributing to technical documents and web pages. The role involves providing technical, statistical, and analytical services for studies, projects, and assessments, and offering technical backstopping to field projects. The incumbent will participate in developing and improving technical, statistical, and analytical tools, methodologies, systems, databases, and indicators. Collaboration is key, involving participation in multidisciplinary teams, leading working groups, and working with other divisions. The role also includes supporting capacity development activities for members, promoting knowledge sharing, and supporting resource mobilization efforts in line with the FAO Strategic Framework.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant experience in marine, fisheries, or aquaculture science, management, or policy, or related fields, is required. Experience in more than one work location or area, particularly in field positions, is also beneficial.
Skills
The role requires experience in coordinating work related to fisheries and aquaculture, analyzing fisheries and aquaculture issues, and providing scientific and communication support. Experience in supporting strategic processes and teams is essential. The ability to work effectively in diverse teams and contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement is also important.
