Systems Administration and Infrastructure Specialist
Organizational Context
The Monitoring and Enhancement of Remote Sensing for National Forest Inventory (MERANTI) project, funded by Norway and managed by the FAO Office in Jakarta, aims to enhance Indonesia's National Forest Inventory (NFI) initiative. It integrates advanced land-monitoring approaches to improve the accuracy, availability, transparency, and timeliness of forest and tree-resource data. This initiative strengthens Indonesia's capacity to generate high-quality forest information, supporting strategic planning, climate change mitigation, climate finance access, and international commitments.
Job Purpose
The Systems Administration and Infrastructure Specialist will be instrumental in operationalizing and ensuring the sustainability of the NFI 2.0 information system. This role focuses on strengthening the IT infrastructure that supports SI-INTAN and its associated applications. Key responsibilities include practical infrastructure improvements, monitoring, backup strategies, security enhancements, and ensuring operational readiness within the consultancy period. The Specialist will collaborate closely with FAO technical staff, the Project Management Unit (PMU), the FAO IT focal point, and IPSDH to develop and review recommendations for infrastructure, security, system operations, and enhancements.
Responsibilities
The Specialist will assess current server utilization, storage, backup arrangements, and security controls to project infrastructure needs for NFI 2.0. They will identify and document priority infrastructure improvements feasible within the project timeline and existing hosting. Responsibilities include assisting in capacity planning and developing an indicative expansion plan for the next three years, and periodically monitoring this plan based on system changes. The role involves configuring and technically checking development, testing, and production environments, and compiling technical information on hosting, storage, network, access, and availability requirements. The Specialist will monitor infrastructure indicators, recommend improvements, and assist with user authentication and access controls. They will implement server hardening measures, configure monitoring and alerting mechanisms, and perform routine security updates and patch management. The role includes supporting security patching after vulnerability testing, coordinating on infrastructure security requirements, and assisting with the implementation and testing of backup and recovery procedures. Troubleshooting infrastructure issues, conducting backup restoration tests, reviewing backup policies, and supporting disaster recovery testing are also key duties. Finally, the Specialist will prepare infrastructure documentation and assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a capacity plan, while supporting knowledge transfer activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience is required in system administration, IT infrastructure management, cloud or on-premises server administration, and enterprise information system support.
Skills
Essential skills include demonstrated experience administering Linux server operating systems and virtualization/container environments, and proven experience configuring/maintaining web servers, containerized applications, and database services (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server). Sound knowledge of server infrastructure, data storage, backup/recovery, network administration, and server security best practices is necessary. Familiarity with Indonesia's forest inventory and monitoring systems, particularly supporting IPSDH or the Ministry of Forestry, is required. Direct experience with SI-INTAN or similar forest monitoring systems is highly desirable. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills are crucial, as are excellent written and verbal communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English for effective collaboration.
