In South Africa, the FAO Country Office collaborates with government departments and UN agencies on projects like the "Pandemic Fund Project," strengthening health systems through improved surveillance, laboratory capacity, and training. The office also builds on the "Empowering Veterinary Paraprofessional Entrepreneurs" project, supporting Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) in establishing sustainable primary animal healthcare businesses.
Job Purpose
The Veterinary Paraprofessional Business Facilitator will support the FAO's "Pandemic Fund Project" in South Africa, focusing on the "Empowering Veterinary Paraprofessional Entrepreneurs" (VPP) component. This role involves assisting Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) in their business development and supporting the delivery of training programs to new cohorts. The facilitator will engage with and monitor AHTs' business growth, providing expertise in primary animal healthcare entrepreneurship and business administration. Additionally, the position requires delivering coaching and technical assistance to AHTs to help them navigate challenges and enhance their business operations and compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Provide dedicated technical support and assistance to Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) to help them overcome field challenges and ensure compliance with SAVC rules and regulations. Deliver progress updates during business coaching meetings, sharing insights on AHT business development. Organize bi-weekly meetings and activities to monitor AHT business progress, mentorship, and coaching. Report on AHT business development, mentorship, coaching, and overall progress to FAO. Offer support services, including technical assistance, to both existing and new cohorts of AHTs. Follow up on AHTs who received equipment, providing monthly updates on their business setup, challenges, and solutions. Assist in reviewing business plans, developing AHT business profiles, compiling work plans, and processing AHT business data. Support the development and review of specifications for starter kits and consumables for AHTs. Present AHT starter kit requirements to procurement committees. Assist in mobilizing resources and exposing AHTs to funding and business opportunities. Prepare monthly progress reports on AHT activities and project contributions. Participate in monthly FAO team meetings and webinars.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of professional experience in the animal health discipline is required. Experience working with farmers in communal areas and running a veterinary practice is highly desirable. Proficiency in data analysis and the use of project management software is also beneficial.
Skills
Strong project management skills are essential, including experience with computerized financial, travel, and human resources systems, as well as administrative procedures and policies. Proficiency in data analysis and project management software is required. Knowledge of key stakeholders in the animal health field is important. Excellent communication and report writing skills are necessary. The role also requires results focus, teamwork, effective relationship building, and a commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Familiarity with corporate computerized financial systems and administrative procedures is beneficial.
