Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency dedicated to achieving food security and nutrition for all. FAO supports the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. In Timor-Leste, FAO assists the government in developing policies and programs for food security, hunger reduction, and sustainable natural resource management. Current initiatives focus on climate resilience and natural resources management, including enhancing early warning systems for hydro-meteorological hazards.

Job Purpose

The Graphic Illustrator will support the FAO Timor-Leste (FATIM) project team in developing creative concepts and visual themes for training materials, messages, and advisories. Working under the supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative for Programs and the Project Team Leader, the incumbent will collaborate with the FAO Communications Officer and government institutions. The role involves translating technical content and key messages into engaging visual products for diverse audiences, ensuring better comprehension and dissemination of information related to climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, and anticipatory action within the agricultural sector.

Responsibilities

The Graphic Illustrator will be responsible for creating original artworks and illustrations using professional design software, considering the target audience and purpose. This includes analyzing text to translate concepts into visuals, utilizing colors, graphics, and effects, and combining hand-drawn and digital techniques. The role involves performing corrections as needed and delivering files in high- and low-resolution formats suitable for print and web dissemination, along with complete design packages. The incumbent will support project teams in finalizing training manuals and compendiums of technologies with relevant graphic illustrations. Adherence to FAO standards, guidelines, and clearance processes for all communication materials is essential. Collaboration with technical teams, communications staff, and government counterparts to refine designs based on feedback is also a key responsibility.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of experience in fine arts, graphic design, or a related field is required. Experience in developing visual materials for print and digital use is essential.

Skills

The ideal candidate will possess strong abilities in transforming technical content into clear, engaging visual products for diverse audiences. Skills include developing illustrations, infographics, icons, posters, and social media graphics. The ability to create culturally appropriate and gender-sensitive designs for the Timor-Leste context is important. Proficiency in layout, typography, color theory, composition, visual hierarchy, and branding principles is required. The candidate must be able to produce high-quality outputs in various formats and manage multiple assignments within deadlines. Familiarity with agriculture, climate change, disaster risk reduction, or early warning systems is advantageous. Good computer skills, including graphic design software and Microsoft Office applications, are necessary.
