National Reporting Specialist

Organizational Context
South Africa ratified the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 1997. The UNCCD is a legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. Its vision is to achieve a land degradation-neutral world by 2030, supporting communities in rehabilitating, conserving, and sustainably managing land and water resources. The Convention's implementation in South Africa is guided by national action programmes, land degradation neutrality targets, and drought initiatives, with monitoring through national reporting processes.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The primary purpose is to prepare and develop South Africa's national report on the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification for 2026. This involves synthesizing data, consulting stakeholders, and ensuring the report aligns with international frameworks and national objectives for sustainable land management and combating desertification.
Responsibilities
The National Reporting Specialist will prepare South Africa's 2026 national report on UNCCD implementation. This includes reviewing guidance documents, reporting manuals, and the PRAIS portal. The specialist will identify and consult with relevant entities, departments, research institutions, and civil society to gather and analyze data. A reporting roadmap with clear activities and timelines will be developed. Collaboration with a regional consultant for guidance and capacity building support is essential. The role involves delivering presentations, ensuring gender integration in reporting, coordinating all project activities, and developing a summary report for policymakers. Other mutually agreed tasks may be assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience is required in fields such as natural/environmental science, agricultural studies, geography, GIS/Remote Sensing, or Natural Resources Management. This experience should align with the educational requirements and the scope of the reporting task.
Skills
Key skills include strong analytical abilities for biophysical and socio-economic data, excellent communication and documentation standards, and proficiency in corporate computerized systems and administrative procedures. Experience with SDG indicator 15.3.1 and understanding of the UNCCD’s gender-responsive strategy, including reporting on gender-disaggregated data, are highly desirable. The role also requires teamwork, relationship building, and a commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
