The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is recruiting a National Fisheries Specialist to be stationed at the FAO Country Office in Seychelles. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Deputy FAO Representative in Madagascar and the technical supervision of the Programme Coordinator, in collaboration with the Project Team Leader. The position is within the Agricultural Department, contributing to the FAO's mission in the region.
Job Purpose
The National Fisheries Specialist will provide essential technical expertise to support the successful implementation of project activities in Seychelles. Under the guidance of the Programme Coordinator and Project Team Leader, the specialist will ensure that project objectives are met and outcomes are achieved as outlined in the Project Document. This role is crucial for driving the project forward effectively and efficiently, contributing to the timely completion of all assigned tasks until the project's reporting and closing phases.
Responsibilities
The National Fisheries Specialist will be responsible for assessing and documenting the fisheries sector's characteristics, including grading practices and market dynamics, with a focus on tuna species and gender considerations. This includes leading data collection and analysis for fish grading systems and seafood branding. The specialist will review and provide technical input on national legislation related to fisheries, food safety, and exports. They will design and facilitate consultations and workshops with diverse stakeholders, including fishers and processors, ensuring inclusive participation. Key tasks involve leading the development and pilot implementation of a fish grading system, facilitating knowledge-sharing initiatives, and developing capacity-building activities on grading standards and quality improvement. The role also includes providing technical assistance for fish certification and the establishment of a Seychelles Seafood Brand, contributing to its marketing strategy and promotional activities. The specialist will coordinate with stakeholders, prepare technical reports, and an end-of-mission report, and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Requires at least 5 years of professional experience and knowledge in fish grading and post-harvest techniques, fisheries management, and fisheries development. A university degree in fisheries sciences or sustainable fisheries management is also a prerequisite.

The role requires strong results focus, teamwork, and communication abilities. Candidates should possess skills in building effective relationships and knowledge sharing. Essential functional skills include strong administrative and organizational capabilities, excellent verbal and communication skills, and computer literacy.
