Junior Programme Support Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the transformation to efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems to improve production, nutrition, the environment, and livelihoods. The Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU) leads FAO's response to regional priorities in food security, agriculture, and rural development. REU advises on regional priorities, implements approved programmes, monitors progress, and supports regional policy dialogue, partnerships, capacity development, and resource mobilization. The office also manages national programmes and projects within the region. This position is based in the REU office in Budapest, Hungary.
Job Purpose
The Junior Programme Support Specialist will provide essential support in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the regional work programme. This role involves significant coordination and operational assistance to ensure the effective execution of FAO's strategic objectives within the Europe and Central Asia region. The specialist will contribute to the overall success of regional initiatives by facilitating smooth operations, supporting planning processes, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting on programme activities and outcomes. This position is crucial for maintaining the momentum of regional development efforts and achieving FAO's mission in the area.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Programme Coordination and Planning Officer, and in collaboration with technical officers and team members, the Junior Programme Support Specialist will assist in programme coordination, implementation, planning, monitoring, and reporting. Key duties include supporting the regional planning process, formulating and reviewing the Regional Work Programme, and contributing to corporate planning. The role involves supporting regional programme coordination and the implementation of the FAO Strategic Framework. Additionally, the specialist will assist in budget management by preparing reports using FAO systems, and contribute to output-level monitoring and year-end reporting exercises, including providing advisory services to countries. Preparing background documents and reports, and providing logistical and administrative support for meetings, events, and workshops, including minute preparation, are also core responsibilities. The role may also involve other related activities as required.
Work Experience
One year of relevant experience is required in supporting the coordination, monitoring, and reporting of multi-disciplinary activities within international or technical organizations. Experience in more than one work location or area, particularly in field positions, is desirable. Experience in supporting programme planning or project proposal development, programme/project coordination and implementation, and programme/project monitoring and reporting is also beneficial.
Skills
Key skills include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Demonstrated understanding of technical programme functions, operational guidelines, and project/programme management procedures, preferably within UN or FAO frameworks, is important. Experience in supporting programme planning, project proposal development, programme/project coordination and implementation, and programme/project monitoring and reporting is highly valued.
