Organizational Context

The Markets and Trade Division (EST) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, monitors and analyzes global agricultural commodity markets and trade. It collects and disseminates market and policy information, conducts outlook studies, and provides technical support to member countries. The Division also issues early warnings on food security issues through its Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) and produces key publications like the State of Agricultural Commodity Markets and the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook. It also supports several intergovernmental groups and forums.

Job Purpose

The incumbent will provide essential technical, statistical, and analytical support to the Food and Agricultural Market Analysis team. This involves contributing to the monitoring of agricultural commodity markets, conducting quantitative analyses on commodity prices, macroeconomic and energy market linkages, and policy impacts. The role focuses on delivering research, technical analysis, and project-related services to support the team's objectives. Key activities include analyzing economic and social data, maintaining market databases, preparing analytical outputs like reports and policy briefs, and supporting market monitoring and assessment to identify implications of emerging issues and policy changes.

Responsibilities

The Young Professional Officer (Economist) will be responsible for analyzing social, economic, environmental, and technological information, data, and statistics for various documents. This includes maintaining and updating market databases and web pages, and providing technical support to ongoing projects. The role involves collaborating on the development of training materials and organizing workshops. Furthermore, the incumbent will assist in organizing and following up on meetings, consultations, and conferences, preparing necessary materials, and providing information to partners. Specific duties include supporting the quality assurance of market and price databases, contributing to quantitative analyses on market dynamics, macroeconomic linkages, and trade developments, and assisting in the preparation of analytical outputs such as reports, technical notes, and datasets.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in economic analysis, market analysis, or a related field is required. Experience in quantitative analysis, database management, and report writing is also necessary.

Skills

Strong analytical and quantitative skills are essential, with the ability to conduct economic and market analysis. Proficiency in data management, statistical software, and database maintenance is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for preparing reports and presenting findings.
