National Gender Specialist

Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the transformation to efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems to achieve the 2030 Agenda. As a specialized UN agency, FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and achieve food security for all. FAO Country Offices assist governments in developing policies and programs for food security and nutrition, alongside supporting sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. This position is based in the FAO Representation in Ghana, Accra, focusing on the vital cocoa sector.

Job Purpose

The National Gender Specialist will contribute to strengthening gender mainstreaming within Ghana's cocoa sector. This will be achieved through conducting analytical and technical activities that foster community dialogue, enhance conflict prevention mechanisms, and improve natural resource governance. The role is crucial for promoting a more inclusive and equitable cocoa sector by addressing persistent gender inequalities and supporting the development of a comprehensive national Cocoa Gender Policy.

Responsibilities

The Specialist will conduct a Gender Baseline Study, reviewing existing policies, strategies, and datasets related to gender in Ghana's cocoa sector. This includes developing an inception report, creating gender-sensitive research instruments, and leading field data collection across selected regions. The study will assess gender disparities in access to resources, finance, services, participation, labour, income control, climate resilience, market access, and technology. The Specialist will also analyze data, prepare a comprehensive study report, and provide technical support for the development and validation of the Cocoa Gender Policy, ensuring alignment with national and international frameworks. Coordination and reporting activities include presenting findings, submitting progress updates, and producing high-quality technical reports.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in gender analysis, policy development, social research, or agricultural development is necessary. Demonstrated experience in conducting gender assessments and baseline studies, along with experience supporting policy formulation and validation processes, is essential. Familiarity with Ghana's cocoa sector and agricultural policies is considered an asset.

Skills

Key skills include strong expertise in gender analysis methodologies, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and excellent report writing and policy drafting abilities. Experience facilitating stakeholder consultations and validation workshops is important. A good understanding of cocoa value chains, agricultural development, and gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation frameworks is beneficial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong organizational, interpersonal, and facilitation skills are required. Knowledge of statistical analysis software is desirable.
