Junior National Forest Restoration Specialist

Organizational Context

FAO partners with the Government of Armenia to transform agrifood systems, aligning with SDGs, the Paris Agreement, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Armenia faces significant climate change vulnerability, impacting its forests and rural energy needs. A Green Climate Fund (GCF) project, "Forest resilience of Armenia," commenced in 2021, co-financed by various agencies. FAO and the Ministry of Environment's EPIU are executing entities, with FAO leading overall implementation. This project aims to enhance community resource management, improve fuelwood practices, and promote sustainable timber and non-timber forest products.

Job Purpose

The Junior National Forest Restoration Specialist will support the implementation of the GCF-funded "Forest resilience of Armenia" project. The role involves delivering hands-on training to project stakeholders, including Hayantar employees, on forest planting and coppice management techniques. The incumbent will also provide crucial follow-up, backstopping, and monitoring support to FAO staff and field operations, particularly at the forest restoration sites in Syunik Marz. This position is key to ensuring effective knowledge transfer and capacity building within local communities and project partners, contributing to the project's goals of enhancing forest resilience and promoting sustainable rural green growth.

Responsibilities

Conduct tree marking according to the "selective upgrading" methodology. Support Hayantar SNCO and community stakeholders in selecting sites for "selective upgrading" and subsequent tree harvesting operations. Provide on-the-job training to Hayantar SNCO and local community members on adaptive management measures for degraded coppice forests, emphasizing knowledge sharing and practical application. Oversee the daily on-site technical implementation of silvicultural measures and tree planting activities, assessing progress, identifying challenges, and recommending improvements. Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure proper execution of silvicultural measures and planting activities. Follow up and backstop operations at the Sisian nursery. Provide technical guidance on adaptive management and forest restoration issues. Prepare monthly field visit reports detailing progress, observations, risks, and follow-up actions.

Work Experience

One year of relevant work experience in forestry and training organization.

Skills

Ability to adopt new ideas and commitment to participatory approaches. Strong communication and advocacy skills. Experience in conducting trainings is an asset.
