Value Chain and Private Sector Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in partnership with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, is developing a GEF-funded project. This initiative aims to establish a sustainable model for ecosystem-based fisheries management in Inland Waters Fisheries Management Areas. The project will support small-scale fishers' livelihoods, enhance food security, protect biodiversity, restore degraded freshwater ecosystems, and foster sustainable small-scale fishery business enterprises.
Job Purpose
The role provides essential technical and operational support to the FAO project team. The primary focus is on compiling and organizing critical information related to value chain analysis, private sector engagement strategies, and overall project preparation activities. This involves gathering data on market trends, identifying key stakeholders, and contributing to the development of project documents, ensuring alignment with project objectives and the engagement of relevant private sector actors for enhanced project outcomes.
Responsibilities
The specialist will support the compilation and analysis of information on value chain conditions, including costs, prices, market preferences, and standards. This includes identifying key actors for engagement to promote global environmental benefits. The role involves providing input on investment opportunities for SMEs to improve small-scale fisheries livelihoods and supporting market trend analysis for new inland fisheries products, including digitalization and certification. Strategic approaches for private sector engagement will be developed, identifying potential SME champions. The specialist will assist in preparing project documents, including the Private Sector Engagement Plan, and organizing technical inputs and supporting documentation for project activities. This includes managing project files, consultation records, and meeting materials, and performing other related technical and operational support tasks as assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience is required in areas such as fisheries value chain development, agribusiness, private sector engagement, market development, or SME development. Experience in processing and marketing for aquaculture/fisheries products is also relevant. The candidate must possess working knowledge of English and Bahasa Indonesia and be a national of Indonesia or a resident with a valid work permit.
Skills
Key skills include results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing. Experience in marketing strategies, entrepreneurship promotion, and linking small-scale producers to value chains is highly desirable. The ability to facilitate business-to-business connections and negotiate agreements is important. Excellent social, communication, and organizational skills are needed for engaging with government, experts, and local communities. Strong analytical skills for market trends and business opportunities, attention to detail, and the ability to prepare analytical reports and strategic recommendations are essential. Experience with GEF or other internationally funded projects is a plus.
