Job Purpose
The National Project Specialist will be instrumental in coordinating the implementation of the World Bank-funded project "Building a Resilient Future: Strengthening Pandemic Prevention Preparedness and Response through One Health Approach Pandemic" in South Africa. This role is crucial for ensuring the effective execution of project activities, contributing to the overall goal of enhancing national health system resilience against pandemics. The specialist will work collaboratively with national agencies and implementing partners to achieve project objectives within the specified timeframe.
Responsibilities
The National Project Specialist will lead and support various project activities, including epidemiological surveillance and analysis, and providing technical input on disease intelligence. Responsibilities include strengthening laboratory surveillance systems, developing and customizing training curricula for government officers and animal health workers, and leading training delivery on epidemiology, surveillance, and response strategies in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture. The specialist will mentor veterinary officers and laboratory personnel, support technical monitoring of project outputs and outcomes, and participate in technical missions. Additionally, the role involves preparing technical reports and briefs for FAO and the Pandemic Fund Secretariat, providing evidence for project decisions, and collaborating closely with project coordinators and focal persons to ensure alignment with government priorities and effective engagement with delivery partners.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in Animal Health or Production is required. This experience should align with the project's focus on epidemiology and public health preparedness.

Essential skills include strong results focus, teamwork, and effective communication. The candidate should excel at building relationships and knowledge sharing. Proficiency in data analysis and project management software is necessary. Understanding of South African biosecurity protocols, animal disease control, and surveillance systems, including early warning and emergency preparedness, is crucial.
