Local Agronomist (Samegrelo Region)
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representation in Georgia aims to assist the government in developing policies and programs to achieve food security, reduce hunger, and promote sustainable agricultural, fisheries, and forestry sectors. This Local Agronomist position is part of the "Formulation and design of Land Consolidation in Georgia" project (UTF/GEO/034/GEO-F), focusing on providing local support in pilot areas. The project integrates land consolidation with irrigation rehabilitation under the World Bank's GRAIL Project, aiming to improve agricultural production, land and water use efficiency, land markets, and land rights.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will provide essential technical support for the successful implementation of the "Formulation and design of Land Consolidation in Georgia" project. This involves focusing on all land consolidation-related activities within the selected pilot areas. The role is crucial for ensuring the project's objectives are met on the ground, contributing to the introduction of a functional land consolidation instrument in Georgia. This support will facilitate more efficient farm structures, enhance agricultural development, and integrate broader environmental and climate objectives, ultimately contributing to the development of a National Land Consolidation Strategy and Programme.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support for the land consolidation pilot project under the GRAIL project in selected rural areas, reporting to FAO and the Head of the LMA Land Consolidation Unit. Manage day-to-day project implementation, including communication with local authorities, landowners, and farmers. Facilitate community engagement and participation in land consolidation activities, fostering consensus and conflict resolution. Assist in identifying and inventorying landowners and farmers in pilot areas, conducting interviews, and collecting data. Contribute to the Land Consolidation Feasibility Study Report by analyzing the agricultural situation and potential. Support land valuation and re-allotment processes. Ensure alignment of land consolidation activities with agricultural support programs and government policies. Facilitate local stakeholder consultations, adoption, registration, and implementation of the Land Consolidation Plan. Contribute to the development of the National Land Consolidation Programme based on pilot experiences.
Work Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in agronomy, horticulture, plant production or protection, amelioration, or soil management. Experience in land consolidation is considered an asset. Experience working with rural communities and farmers is highly desirable. Experience in multi-disciplinary teams and large-scale development projects is an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in computer literacy, including spreadsheets, databases, data management, and Microsoft Office. Excellent communication, coordination, and negotiation skills. Proven ability to mobilize and work with rural communities and farmers. Strong understanding of the agricultural sector, government policies, and support programs. Familiarity with land governance and tenure systems. Experience with international organizations, government agencies, and development partners is beneficial. Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing are core competencies.
