FLBRA - FAO Representation in Brasil
Software Engineer specialized in in-situ/on-farm Genetic Resources
Organizational Context
The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and its Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) support projects in developing countries, including Brazil. The BSF project PR-154-S-Brazil, known as Conservain-II, focuses on strengthening local conservation of in-situ/on-farm plant genetic resources and integrating with Embrapa genebanks. This initiative is vital for food security and community livelihoods, aiming to integrate data, generate territorial intelligence, manage germplasm flow, ensure participatory governance, and articulate networks among stakeholders for agrobiodiversity conservation.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will be responsible for the comprehensive development and consolidation of the Aleloinsitu software and its dedicated database, specifically designed for in-situ/on-farm genetic resources (GR). This critical role encompasses the full lifecycle from rigorous testing and validation to the final deployment of the Aleloinsitu system within a live web production environment. The software aims to centralize scattered information, fostering greater connectivity among conservation initiatives across Brazil. It will also generate territorial intelligence through the assessment, mapping, and diagnosis of agrobiodiversity within Indigenous, Quilombola, family farming, and traditional communities, thereby strengthening agrobiodiversity conservation efforts.
Responsibilities
The Software Engineer will support the design, development, testing, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ensuring responsiveness and accessibility across devices. Key tasks include implementing advanced spatial interaction features like dynamic marker clustering, heat maps, and geospatial filters, along with developing customized visual components and interactive dashboards using various chart types. The role involves designing and implementing map interfaces with HTML5, CSS3, and a front-end framework, conducting performance tests for geographic map layers, and programming dynamic map features using geospatial libraries connected to Java APIs. Additionally, the incumbent will create custom visual components and management dashboards with graphics libraries, perform testing routines and debugging for the Aleloinsitu system, configure resources for stable communication between the PostgreSQL database, Java logic, and front-end components, and develop an API for interoperable database asset sharing. Monitoring team training and supporting data migration are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of proven experience in software development is required, specifically utilizing Java, PostgreSQL database, and NetBeans IDE. This experience should demonstrate practical application in developing robust software solutions.
Skills
Required skills include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing. Technical skills encompass applied thematic knowledge of IT solutions for genetic resources (plant, animal, microorganism sectors), data engineering and migration (APIs, integration frameworks, data migration workflows), and thematic experience in GR systems development. Proficiency in front-end development (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, Flexbox/Grid, Bootstrap/Material UI), geospatial integration (Leaflet/OpenLayers, Java APIs), asynchronous communication (AJAX/Fetch API, WebSockets), and data visualization (Chart.js, ApexCharts, D3.js, Highcharts) is also essential.
