Communication Assistant
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency dedicated to achieving food security for all and leading international efforts to defeat hunger. Working in over 130 countries, FAO supports the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. FAO Country Offices provide policy advice, technical assistance, and support partnerships to help governments develop programmes and projects that enhance food security, reduce malnutrition, and promote sustainable use of natural resources.
Job Purpose
The Communication Assistant will be responsible for implementing the country's communication strategy in Nepal. This role requires close coordination and coherence with FAO's organizational and corporate communication policies and operational guidelines. The incumbent will ensure that all communication activities and outputs effectively support FAO's objectives in the country, contributing to the dissemination of key messages and the overall visibility of FAO's work in achieving food security and sustainable agrifood systems.
Responsibilities
The Communication Assistant will collaborate with project personnel and government counterparts to manage communication activities. Key duties include managing social media channels, developing and producing high-quality content (text and audio-visual) for various platforms, and coordinating with technical teams to create informative materials. The role involves assisting in media relations, monitoring media coverage, and preparing press clippings. Additionally, the assistant will support the organization of press conferences, briefings, and events, develop communication campaigns, and facilitate the dissemination of information to FAO staff. Responsibilities also include providing communication support for events, capturing outcomes, monitoring the impact of communication activities, and recommending improvements to strategies.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications is necessary, with a preference for experience within the fields of food security, agriculture, and climate change. This experience should complement the required educational background.
Skills
Essential skills include strong results focus, teamwork, and communication abilities. The candidate should excel at building effective relationships, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite is required, along with experience in multimedia production (video, photography, audio). Strong interpersonal skills, campaign management, content planning, and analytics are crucial. The ability to optimize digital content for various platforms and excellent organizational skills with attention to detail are also key requirements.
