National Value Chain Analyst
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the transformation to efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems globally. The Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands (SAP) drives food system transformation, agriculture, and rural development across the Pacific, fostering relationships with governments and institutions. FAO SAP is implementing an EU-funded project in Fiji to enhance agrifood value chains, investment planning, and partnerships for sustainable investment in the sector.
Job Purpose
The National Value Chain Analyst will provide crucial technical expertise to enhance agrifood value chain analysis and support evidence-based investment planning within Fiji. This role involves assessing key agrifood value chains, identifying existing constraints and potential investment opportunities, and integrating critical considerations such as nutrition, gender, and climate resilience. The analyst will generate technical evidence to inform agrifood investment strategies and facilitate effective stakeholder engagement, contributing to the overall goals of the project.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will prepare an inception report and conduct comprehensive value chain assessments for priority agrifood commodities. This includes evaluating production systems, market linkages, overall value chain performance, and identifying investment opportunities. The role requires analyzing gender, nutrition, and climate considerations within these value chains, as well as assessing post-harvest losses and opportunities for value addition. The analyst will develop investment entry-point analyses and provide recommendations for nutrition-sensitive value chain development. Technical inputs will be provided to support agrifood investment planning and partnership development, contributing findings to the National Agrifood Investment Forum. A final consultancy report will be prepared.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is required in areas such as value chain analysis, agribusiness, agricultural economics, market analysis, or rural development. Experience in these fields is essential for the successful performance of the role.
Skills
Essential skills include demonstrated experience in agrifood value chain analysis, agricultural economics, agribusiness, or market systems development. The candidate should have experience conducting value chain, market, or investment analyses, and facilitating stakeholder consultations. Strong analytical, technical writing, and report preparation skills are necessary. Knowledge of agrifood systems, value chain development, and sustainable food systems is desirable, as is experience with government institutions, development partners, or UN agencies. Experience in Fiji or the Pacific region is an asset.
