Communication Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the transformation to sustainable agrifood systems to achieve food security and a better life for all. As a specialized UN agency, FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The GEF6 Green-Ag Project in India aims to transform agriculture for global environmental benefits and conserve biodiversity and forest landscapes. This project focuses on mainstreaming environmental policies into the agricultural sector and demonstrating improved sustainable practices across five demonstration states and their high conservation priority landscapes.
Job Purpose
The Communication Specialist will provide expertise in development and visual communication for FAO projects in India, particularly the GEF6 Green-Ag Project. This role involves creating and managing communication materials to ensure brand consistency and project visibility. The specialist will support content development, facilitate knowledge sharing among stakeholders, and promote project updates through various channels. The position requires ensuring all communication outputs adhere to FAO's corporate policies, guidelines, and branding standards, contributing to the project's overall communication strategy and success.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will develop and maintain communication materials for FAO projects, ensuring brand consistency and visibility, and design/produce visibility materials for the GEF 6 project, including digital and print content. Responsibilities include drafting, editing, and reviewing reports, case studies, and policy papers, and supporting project staff in developing communication products, knowledge materials, and advocacy events. The role involves facilitating knowledge sharing among project states and stakeholders via portals, events, and multimedia. Ensuring compliance with FAO’s corporate policies, guidelines, and FAOSTYLE standards is crucial. The specialist will manage the approval process for communication products, coordinate logo and copyright, and develop project updates for FAO India’s website and social media. Collaboration on video production, motion graphics, and design with external agencies is expected. The role also includes supporting project communication, knowledge management, documenting case studies and success stories, and developing content for sensitive activities, ensuring necessary clearances and compliance with FAO protocols.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required in interdisciplinary research and in developing media and communication materials. Experience should be particularly relevant for web publishing, information management, and hypermedia applications within the development sector, aligning with the described responsibilities.
Skills
Essential skills include strong communication, reporting, and presentation abilities in English. Experience in preparing press releases, news articles, and advocacy messages for various media is necessary. Proficiency in web content management, Photoshop, and desktop publishing tools is required. Experience with photography and photo editing is advantageous. The ability to work independently, coordinate outputs, produce high-quality reports, handle stress, and meet deadlines is crucial. Familiarity with UN agencies and working in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams is also important.
