National Agronomist
Organizational Context
The Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project in Mozambique, supported by FAO, UNEP, and the Ministry of Agriculture, focuses on restoring and protecting key ecosystems like mangroves and floodplains in the Greater Maputo Area. It aims to build institutional and community capacity for climate resilience through sustainable agriculture practices such as conservation agriculture, polycropping, and agroforestry. FAO Mozambique is seeking an Agronomist to oversee and provide technical support for the field implementation of these crucial activities within targeted districts.
Job Purpose
This role is dedicated to advancing rural extension services and promoting resilient, adaptive agricultural production systems. The Agronomist will focus on implementing and supporting conservation agriculture, polycropping, and agroforestry techniques. The objective is to enhance the capacity of local communities and farmers to adopt sustainable practices that improve livelihoods and build resilience against climate change impacts. This involves direct engagement with field teams and farmers to ensure effective knowledge transfer and application of best practices in agriculture.
Responsibilities
Develop participatory field implementation plans with local technicians. Supervise and ensure the accurate delivery of Farmer Field School (FFS) training cycles. Coordinate with the FAO Project Officer on project strategies, training design, and technical assistance for field staff and lead farmers. Support all project activities, including procurement, input distribution, travel, and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL). Document adaptation practices, results, and impacts for reporting and knowledge sharing. Assist in implementing the e-voucher system for agricultural inputs to FFS groups and farmers. Ensure coherence and synergy by coordinating field activities with other project components. Prepare regular progress reports on field activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is required in areas such as agricultural extension, resilient farming systems, or related fields. Experience working within rural communities in Mozambique is desirable, and familiarity with Farmer Field School (FFS) methodologies is considered an advantage.
Skills
Key competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing. Experience in rural communities in Mozambique is desirable. Familiarity with Farmer Field School (FFS) methodologies is an advantage. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Maputo Province is a strong asset. An advanced degree is also considered an asset.
