Seeds Technician

CON
Organizational Context
The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), adopted in 2001, aims to conserve and sustainably use plant genetic resources and ensure equitable benefit sharing. The Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) supports projects in developing countries to improve livelihoods, food security, and climate change adaptation for small-scale farmers. This project, funded under the 5th BSF cycle, focuses on strengthening the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources in Brazil by creating a nationwide network connecting local conservation initiatives with Embrapa's genebanks.
Job Purpose
This role supports the "Support network for local conservation (in situ/on farm) of plant genetic resources in Brazil and integration with Embrapa genebanks" project. The technician will assist in multiplying seeds from Embrapa's banks for later distribution and prepare seed collections for collaborative evaluation with seed guardians. A key aspect involves characterizing creole varieties to enrich the project's seed banks. The position also entails monitoring existing seed fairs and banks, and providing technical support for the establishment of new ones, contributing to the diversification and resilience of local agricultural systems.
Responsibilities
Support the organization of seed fairs and biodiversity inventories. Assist Embrapa researchers in maintaining seed banks to facilitate the multiplication of genetic resources. Conduct phenotypical characterization of plant varieties in both field and controlled environments. Evaluate landrace varieties through participatory trials with local farmers. Provide direct support to seed guardians in project locations, assisting them with participatory trials. Aid in organizing capacity-building events, including seminars and courses for project beneficiaries, fostering knowledge exchange and skill development within the community.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of five years of responsible professional experience in managing field projects within Brazil. Experience should be focused on areas such as sustainable land management, land tenure and/or governance, territorial development, or family farming. A strong understanding of project implementation in these sectors is essential.
Skills
Key competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Essential technical skills include professional registration with CREA (Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy) and a valid driver's license. These skills are crucial for effective project execution and collaboration.
