District Field Technician
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing the AquaVita+ Mozambique Project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, with financial support from the Austrian Development Agency. The project aims to transform the agricultural sector by strengthening resilient food systems and inclusive value chains, empowering smallholder farmers, especially women and youth. Key interventions include Farmer Field Schools, climate-resilient production systems, e-voucher input access, and training on water-saving, nutrition, and natural resource management.
Job Purpose
The District Field Technician will provide crucial rural extension and advisory services, focusing on farmer organization and capacity development. The role involves supporting sustainable agricultural production systems, managing agricultural input distribution via e-voucher systems, and applying market-based approaches. Key technical areas include promoting sustainable land management, agroforestry, water-saving practices for climate resilience, and nutrition-sensitive agriculture. This position is essential for the effective implementation of project activities at the community level, ensuring farmers receive the necessary support to adopt improved practices and enhance their livelihoods.
Responsibilities
Organize and strengthen smallholder farmers into Farmer Field Schools (FFS) for enhanced extension services and capacity building. Support agricultural input distribution, including e-voucher systems, through beneficiary registration, awareness, monitoring, and reporting, while assisting agrodealers. Promote Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and polycropping. Facilitate the adoption of water-saving technologies and climate-resilient practices. Support nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions, including mother care groups and home gardens. Collect, verify, and submit field data using digital platforms, coordinating with farmers, local authorities, and partners. Support coordination with local stakeholders and facilitate the onboarding and capacity development of agrodealers and service providers. Mobilize farmers, register beneficiaries, map farms, and monitor the adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and agroforestry systems. Document lessons learned, success stories, and innovations to contribute to project learning and visibility.
Work Experience
At least 2 years of relevant experience in rural extension, farmer training, agroforestry, sustainable agriculture, or nutrition. Working knowledge of English and Portuguese.
Skills
Demonstrated experience working with smallholder farmers and community-based development. Experience in Farmer Field Schools (FFS), Agroforestry, Sustainable Land Management, agricultural value chains, climate-smart agriculture, or e-voucher systems is an asset. Good knowledge of local languages spoken in Sofala Province. Valid 125cc motorbike driving license and experience driving in difficult terrain. Core competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing.
