FAO
FAIRA - FAO Representation in Iran
Data Recording Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to achieve food security for all and support sustainable agrifood systems globally. As a specialized UN agency, FAO works in over 130 countries, providing policy advice, technical assistance, and capacity development. In Iran, FAO supports the "Empowering Local Communities to Conserve and Develop Endangered Indigenous Livestock Gene Pool" project, focusing on preserving genetic diversity and improving livelihoods through community-based breeding and conservation efforts.
Job Purpose
This role provides crucial technical support for enhancing data recording and management systems related to endangered indigenous livestock breeds in Northwest Iran. The specialist will ensure the scientific integrity of pedigree development, performance recording, and molecular characterization. This work is vital for effective genetic conservation and the successful integration of these efforts into community-based breeding programs, ultimately contributing to the project's objectives of safeguarding animal genetic diversity and improving local resilience and productivity.
Responsibilities
The Data Recording Specialist will review and assess existing data recording systems for target livestock breeds, identifying gaps and proposing improvements for breed registration, identification, and performance data collection. Responsibilities include developing technical guidance for molecular characterization and parentage verification, preparing specifications for laboratory contracts, and evaluating laboratory offers to ensure compliance with standards. The specialist will support the development of sampling strategies, data management procedures, and the integration of molecular and performance data into national databases. Additionally, the role involves assisting with pedigree analysis, contributing technical inputs for advanced reproductive activities, identifying procurement needs for related equipment, and supporting training and capacity-building initiatives for project stakeholders. The specialist will also contribute to the development of a comprehensive plan for animal genetic resources conservation in the region.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively relevant professional experience is required, specifically in livestock genetics data recording and analysis, molecular characterization, parentage verification, or animal genetic resources management. This experience should complement an advanced university degree in a related field.
Skills
Essential skills include strong knowledge of molecular genetics applications in livestock for parentage verification, breed characterization, and genetic diversity analysis. Familiarity with molecular marker technologies, DNA sample collection, traceability, and laboratory coordination is crucial. The candidate should possess knowledge of international best practices for animal genetic resources conservation, pedigree analysis, and data integration. Ability to advise on sampling strategies and data management for genetic studies is required. Good reporting, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills are necessary. Experience with teamwork and collaborative approaches is also important.
