Job Purpose
This role is crucial for supporting the preparation and implementation of climate-related projects in Bangladesh, focusing on climate-resilient livelihoods and agriculture adaptation. The specialist will provide essential technical and policy advice, foster collaboration with government bodies and partners to identify needs and opportunities in food security and economic development, and develop project proposals. A key aspect involves enhancing communication and presentation capabilities for national stakeholders, ensuring effective project execution and alignment with FAO's strategic objectives. The position contributes directly to building resilience in vulnerable landscapes and improving socio-economic conditions through climate adaptation strategies.
Responsibilities
The Senior Climate Change Specialist will coordinate the implementation of the Building Climate Resilient Livelihoods (BCRL) project, working closely with the Department of Environment and Department of Agriculture Extension. This includes leading work plan and budget development, guiding consultants, and ensuring effective stakeholder engagement. The role involves developing and supporting the project's monitoring and evaluation framework, coordinating workshops, and ensuring timely delivery of quality project outputs. Responsibilities also include preparing periodic reports, monitoring budgets in collaboration with FAO operations, and representing FAO in project meetings. Additionally, the specialist will provide technical support to FAO Bangladesh's Environment, Forest, and Climate Change cluster, collecting and analyzing data, advising on climate-resilient agriculture, developing training materials, and engaging with development partners to explore new collaborations and resource mobilization opportunities.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in climate-smart agriculture/livelihoods and environment/natural resource management in developing countries is required. This includes a minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in managing projects and coordinating multi-stakeholder activities. Experience working with government institutions in Bangladesh is highly desirable, as is familiarity with UN or development sector actors. Demonstrated initiative and the ability to deliver results within deadlines are also important.
Skills
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong results focus, teamwork, and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and share knowledge. Essential technical skills include excellent knowledge of climate change negotiations, REDD+, MRV procedures under UNFCCC, and IPCC processes. Proficiency in Climate Resilient Livelihoods and Agriculture Adaptation is required. Proven experience supporting and collaborating with government institutions in Bangladesh is necessary. Familiarity with the UN or development sector actors is advantageous. Demonstrated experience in developing countries and the ability to work independently and deliver results within deadlines are also key requirements.
