Job Purpose
The Communication Officer will be responsible for communicating key issues related to science, technology, and innovation within agrifood systems, aligning with the FAO Science and Innovation Strategy and supporting the implementation of the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031. The role involves contributing to high-quality, audience-led communications, including web publishing and media relations for the Chief Scientist's Office. This position is integral to enhancing the visibility of FAO's scientific work and its contributions to global food security through effective communication strategies.
Responsibilities
The Communication Officer will research and analyze technical, social, economic, environmental, and policy information to inform communication planning and delivery. Responsibilities include producing clear and accurate communication products such as reports, articles, and web content. The role involves collaborating with the Office of Communications (OCC) and other divisions to improve communication processes and databases. The officer will participate in multidisciplinary teams, promote knowledge sharing, and support the planning and implementation of communications and advocacy for the Chief Scientist's Office. This includes designing and editing various communication materials, ensuring cross-cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. Collaboration with technical experts and stakeholders for event management, and supporting outreach to scientific communities are key. The role also involves managing communication risks, promoting good science communication practices, and utilizing data-driven approaches, including AI and analytics, for audience engagement and performance improvement. Dissemination of multilingual, mobile-first content across various formats and monitoring scientific and communication trends are also expected.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant experience in strategic communications is required, specifically within the agriculture, food security, nutrition, and international development sectors, with a focus on science, technology, and innovation. Experience in more than one work location or area is desirable. Proven ability to work with data and technical reports, ensuring accuracy in communication outputs, is essential. Familiarity with peer-review processes and engagement with scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders is also important.
