National Aquaculture and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) office in Iraq is tasked with developing and implementing strategies for national food, agriculture, and rural development. It fosters relationships with government entities and ministries. Currently, FAO Iraq is executing project TCP/IRQ/4001, which aims to establish demonstration sites for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to advance sustainable aquaculture practices. The selected specialist will guide the technical design, coordination, and capacity-building efforts to ensure project success, adhering to both international standards and local requirements.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will be responsible for designing and implementing Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) specifically adapted to the conditions in Iraq. This role involves close coordination with FAO experts and various stakeholders to ensure technical and logistical coherence across all project activities. A key aspect of the position is capacity building, which will be achieved through organizing and delivering workshops and training sessions for fish farmers, extension officers, and other partners, thereby enhancing local expertise in sustainable aquaculture.
Responsibilities
Develop detailed technical specifications for RAS, ensuring alignment with global best practices and local feasibility, while also adhering to environmental and social safeguards. Coordinate with FAO regional and headquarters experts, as well as the Program Management Unit, providing technical support for ongoing aquaculture activities in Iraq. Organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings and consultations. Lead the design and delivery of workshops and training on RAS and sustainable aquaculture, preparing necessary materials and ensuring effective knowledge transfer and mentoring for local stakeholders. Oversee the implementation of RAS, ensuring all components are installed, tested, and operational. Coordinate and supervise field activities for establishing two RAS demonstration sites, including site preparation, equipment setup, calibration, and operational readiness. Provide on-site technical support during installation and monitor system performance, adjusting parameters as needed to optimize functionality. Draft technical documentation and prepare progress reports, meeting minutes, and a final consultancy report with recommendations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience is required in the design, implementation, and project coordination of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). Experience working in more than one location or area of work is also beneficial.
Skills
Demonstrated expertise in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), fish nutrition, and sustainable aquaculture practices is essential. The ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines is crucial. Strong skills in building partnerships and facilitating multi-stakeholder processes are required. Proven experience in designing and delivering effective training programs, coupled with the ability to identify challenges and propose practical solutions, is necessary. Excellent communication skills in both English and Arabic are required, along with a results-focused approach, teamwork, and the ability to build effective relationships and share knowledge.
