Aquaculture and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) Specialist
Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) office in Iraq is tasked with developing and implementing strategies for national food, agriculture, and rural development. The office actively engages with government entities and Ministries. Currently, FAO Iraq is executing project TCP/IRQ/4001, which aims to establish demonstration sites for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to foster sustainable aquaculture. The consultant will be instrumental in leading the technical design, coordination, and capacity-building efforts for the successful deployment of these systems, ensuring alignment with international standards and local requirements.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will be responsible for the design and operationalization of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) specifically adapted to the Iraqi context. This role involves close coordination with FAO experts and relevant stakeholders to ensure technical and logistical coherence across all project activities. A key aspect of the position is capacity building, which will be achieved through the organization and delivery of workshops and training sessions targeted at fish farmers, extension officers, and other project partners. The goal is to enhance local expertise in sustainable aquaculture practices and the management of RAS.
Responsibilities
The specialist will develop detailed technical specifications for RAS, ensuring they align with global best practices and local feasibility, while also adhering to environmental and social safeguards. Responsibilities include liaising with FAO experts at regional and headquarters levels, as well as the Program Management Unit, to provide technical support and follow up on aquaculture activities within the Iraq program. The role involves organizing and facilitating stakeholder meetings and consultations. Furthermore, the specialist will lead the design and delivery of workshops and training sessions on RAS and sustainable aquaculture, preparing necessary materials and ensuring effective knowledge transfer. This includes overseeing the implementation of RAS, ensuring all components are installed and operational, and supervising field activities for establishing two demonstration sites. On-site technical support during installation and monitoring of system performance during initial operation are also key duties, along with drafting technical documentation and preparing progress reports.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience is required in the design, implementation, and project coordination of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
Skills
Essential skills include a deep understanding of RAS, fish nutrition, and sustainable aquaculture practices. The ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines is crucial. Proficiency in building partnerships and facilitating multi-stakeholder processes is highly valued. Experience in designing and delivering effective training programs, identifying challenges, and proposing practical solutions is also required. Proven experience in capacity building and stakeholder engagement is necessary for success in this role.
