Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in partnership with the Government of Malawi and funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), is implementing the Ecosystem-based Adaptation for Resilient Watersheds and Communities in Malawi (EbAM) project. This six-year initiative spans 11 districts, aiming to bolster climate resilience for vulnerable ecosystems and communities. It focuses on integrated watershed planning, diversified agricultural value chains, and institutional capacity building aligned with Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approaches. The project seeks to enhance sustainable production and benefit over 500,000 people, restore land, and achieve significant emission reductions.
Job Purpose
The Translator will be responsible for translating key project documents from English into local Malawian languages, specifically Chichewa and Chitumbuka. This role is crucial for ensuring effective communication and accessibility of project information to local stakeholders. The translated materials will cover a range of critical topics, including agriculture, natural resource management, the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), and specific approaches like the Household Approach and Dimitra Approach. Accurate and timely translation will support the project's overall objectives and outreach efforts.
Responsibilities
The Translator will collaborate closely with Office of Communications (OCC) branches and relevant Communication focal points. Key responsibilities include reviewing agriculture, natural resource management, gender, and environmental social safeguard documents to develop a translation workplan. The incumbent will translate technical documents from English into Chichewa and Chitumbuka, ensuring adherence to FAO standards and guidelines. This involves maintaining liaison with OCC for compliance with messaging and clearance processes. The role may also involve attending technical meetings and presentations. All communication materials must follow FAO's clearance procedures and comply with organizational standards, including those related to the FAO Strategic Framework, social media policies, branding, and terminology.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience is required in translating technical documents related to agriculture, natural resource management, fisheries, nutrition, and food security. This experience should be complemented by a University Degree in Linguistics or Translation Studies from a recognized institution.
Skills
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong Results Focus, Teamwork, and Communication abilities. Proficiency in Building Effective Relationships and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement is essential. The ability to adhere to high standards of quality and meet deadlines is also a key requirement for this role.
