Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Malawi, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), is implementing the Ecosystem-based Adaptation for Resilient Watersheds and Communities in Malawi (EbAM) project. This six-year initiative aims to enhance climate resilience in vulnerable ecosystems and communities through integrated watershed management and diversified agricultural value chains. The project will benefit over 500,000 people across 11 districts, restoring significant land areas and achieving emission reductions. FAO provides technical support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, engaging the Department of Agriculture Extension Services to implement the Farmer Field School methodology.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will be responsible for designing and creating illustrations for the EbAM project's Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials. This includes developing visual content for training manuals, modules, and posters related to natural resources management, Farmer Field Schools (FFS), the Household Approach, and Dimitra Club activities. The role is crucial for enhancing the project's communication and visibility by translating complex concepts into clear, engaging visual aids that effectively convey project information to diverse target audiences.
Responsibilities
The Illustrator will collaborate closely with the Office of Communications (OCC) and relevant focal points to produce original artworks and illustrations using professional design software. Key tasks include reviewing training materials to develop an illustration work plan, creating images and text for insertion into manuals and modules, and translating textual concepts into visual representations. The role involves utilizing colors, graphics, and effects to enhance visualization, potentially combining hand-drawn and digital techniques. The incumbent will manage up to two rounds of corrections based on quality checks and deliver final files in high- and low-resolution formats, including complete design packages with source files, ensuring compliance with FAO standards and guidelines.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience in creating illustrations for training and educational materials, preferably within the United Nations or other international organizations, is necessary. This experience should demonstrate a strong portfolio of relevant illustrative work.
Skills
Essential skills include proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. The candidate should demonstrate strong results focus, teamwork, and communication abilities. Experience in building effective relationships, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement is also valued. The ability to incorporate branding guidelines into designed work is crucial for ensuring project consistency and visual identity.
