FASRL
Expert in Latex Diagnosis (Hevea brasiliensis)
Organizational Context
The Smallholder Rubber Revitalization Project (SRRP) in Sri Lanka aims to boost rubber smallholder productivity and sustainability through improved technologies and research-extension linkages. Latex diagnosis (LD) is crucial for optimizing yield and tree health but is limited among smallholders, hindering productivity and income. The project seeks to strengthen institutional and technical capacities in LD, interpretation, and quality management by engaging an international expert to train Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRISL) officers, thereby supporting SRRP objectives.
Job Purpose
The incumbent will provide high-level international expertise to significantly enhance the capabilities of RRISL's Research and Technical Officers in the critical area of latex diagnosis. This involves comprehensive training in all facets of the process, from meticulous sampling and precise testing methodologies to the accurate interpretation of data. The ultimate goal is to empower these officers to effectively apply diagnostic results for informed, field-level decision-making, thereby improving rubber cultivation practices and contributing to the overall success of the Smallholder Rubber Revitalization Project.
Responsibilities
The Expert will be responsible for designing and delivering comprehensive theoretical and practical training sessions on latex diagnosis for Hevea brasiliensis. Key areas of focus will include the fundamental principles and objectives of latex diagnosis, standardized sampling and extraction procedures, and chemical preparation techniques. Training will cover laboratory analysis of critical latex parameters such as sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, thiols, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and Mg++ content. A significant component will involve teaching data interpretation skills to identify physiological constraints in rubber trees. Finally, the expert will guide participants on utilizing diagnostic results to formulate effective recommendations for tapping, stimulation, and relevant agronomic strategies to optimize rubber production.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience in latex diagnosis for Hevea brasiliensis is required. This experience must be complemented by a proven track record of successfully conducting training programs on latex diagnosis. Candidates should possess the necessary academic qualifications as outlined in the education requirements.
Skills
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong competencies in Results Focus, Teamwork, and Communication. Essential skills include the ability to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders and a commitment to Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Practical expertise in latex diagnosis and training delivery is paramount.
