Organizational Context
The Smallholder Rubber Revitalization Project (SRRP) in Sri Lanka aims to enhance productivity, sustainability, and resilience within the smallholder rubber sector. It focuses on improving agronomic practices and implementing integrated plant protection strategies to combat declining productivity and diseases like Circular Leaf Spot Disease (CLSD) and root diseases. The project seeks a National Expert to provide crucial technical support, field supervision, and capacity building to improve plantation health and overall productivity.
Job Purpose
The National Expert on Rubber Production and Plant Protection will provide specialized technical guidance on rubber cultivation, fertility management, and integrated pest and disease control within smallholder rubber systems. Key responsibilities include supporting the implementation of integrated disease management programs, developing updated field manuals, and contributing to national training and awareness initiatives for smallholders and extension personnel. The role is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the Smallholder Rubber Revitalization Project (SRRP) by improving plantation health and productivity through expert intervention and knowledge transfer.
Responsibilities
Assess current smallholder production and plant protection practices, with a focus on target diseases. Support ongoing Integrated Disease Management (IDM) activities for major diseases, including CLSD and root diseases. Assist with current Plant Nutrient Management activities. Conduct training sessions and workshops for Technical staff, Rubber Extension Officers of RRISL, and Rubber Development Officers. Provide direct assistance to technical staff and officers on pest, disease, and nutrient management matters. Monitor field progress, prepare comprehensive reports, and deliver feedback to the Project Management Unit (PMU) to ensure project objectives are met effectively.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in rubber agronomy and pest/disease management is required. Demonstrated experience in field-level implementation and conducting smallholder trials is essential. Familiarity with rubber diseases, particularly CLSD, and knowledge of integrated control strategies are also necessary.
Skills
Essential skills include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Demonstrated experience in field-level implementation and smallholder trials is crucial. Familiarity with rubber diseases such as CLSD and knowledge of integrated control strategies are also required for this role.
