Organizational Context
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has established a Project Office in Ukraine to enhance technical and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable rural communities. Ukraine, an FAO member since 2003, has seen the Organization focus on emergency response and agricultural development. Since February 2022, FAO has significantly increased its support for agricultural production and food systems to safeguard food security amidst the ongoing conflict. This position is based in Mykolaiv, Ukraine.
Job Purpose
The Driver will be responsible for providing safe and reliable transportation for FAO Office personnel within Ukraine. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of official duties by maintaining the assigned vehicle(s) in optimal condition, ensuring their safety, technical soundness, and compliance with all regulations. The Driver's adherence to schedules and efficient navigation will directly support the organization's mission and staff mobility within the country, contributing to the effective delivery of assistance and operational activities.
Responsibilities
Provide official transportation services for staff members and official visitors, including airport and railway station assistance. Maintain comprehensive logs of trips, fuel consumption, and expenditures. Ensure daily maintenance of assigned vehicles, performing minor repairs and coordinating major services to uphold safety and technical standards. Keep vehicles clean and presentable. Ensure all required documentation, including insurance and maintenance logs, is current. Respond to vehicle accidents or incidents according to organizational procedures. Strictly adhere to all organizational, local country, and UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) regulations, security protocols, and road safety rules, including speed limits. For armored vehicles, follow enhanced security protocols. Collect and deliver correspondence, documents, and procurement items between offices and field locations. Conduct official visits to postal facilities, airports, and government agencies. Provide operational support for field mission preparation, including security clearances and travel documentation. Accompany experts on field missions as required. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of experience as a driver is required, with a preference for experience gained within the UN or an NGO. This experience should demonstrate a proven ability to handle official transportation duties safely and efficiently.
Skills
Essential skills include a results-focused approach, teamwork, effective communication, and relationship building. The ability to share knowledge and engage in continuous improvement is valued. Proficiency in driving rules and regulations, with skills in minor vehicle repair, is necessary. A safe driving record, punctuality, and reliability are critical. Good knowledge of local conditions and the ability to adapt to extended working hours are also important. Intermediate English (Level B) is an advantage.
