Organizational Context
The FAO Sub-Regional office for West Africa (SFW) supports countries in addressing food security, nutrition, agriculture, and rural development. It provides technical expertise to 15 ECOWAS member countries and 17 CILSS member countries, focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity preservation, and natural resource data management. SFW is increasingly involved in developing and implementing projects funded by key environmental donors like GEF, GCF, and the Adaptation Fund, aiming to expand its portfolio to assist countries in their climate action ambitions.
Job Purpose
The GEF Projects Sub-Regional Coordinator will lead the coordination of multi-country GEF and GCF projects within the FAO Sub-Regional office for West Africa. This role is crucial for enhancing FAO's support in designing and implementing climate-related projects, with a specific focus on GEF initiatives. The coordinator will provide essential support to project management units and project managers at the country level, ensuring the timely and high-quality delivery of these vital projects across the sub-region.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and oversee the execution of project activities according to approved documents and work plans, ensuring alignment with project objectives and timelines through stakeholder collaboration. Manage and update GEF project plans, with a strong emphasis on budget and work plan adherence, and utilize corporate tools for procurement, HR, and travel planning. Maintain updated HR monitoring tables and consultant lists for effective HR management and budgeting. Ensure Logical Framework Matrices are complete and current, collecting data for regular monitoring of project results and reporting to governance mechanisms. Foster positive working relationships with stakeholders and administrative teams. Support communication efforts for project visibility. Ensure timely submission of reports and completion of deliverables, maintain project documentation, support evaluations, and prepare for project closure. Identify, mitigate, and manage project risks, escalating issues as necessary, and provide general assistance for GEF and GCP projects.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in project/programme management is required. Experience working in multiple countries within the sub-region is also essential. Proven knowledge of the GEF and GCF project cycle is a key requirement for this role.
Skills
Key competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Essential skills involve proven knowledge of the GEF and GCF project cycle, a track record in GEF/GCF project coordination or management, and experience in developing and contributing to the implementation of such projects. Experience working across multiple countries in the sub-region is also highly valued.
