Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is dedicated to defeating hunger and achieving food security globally. The Internship Programme aims to attract motivated young individuals to contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to FAO's work, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and FAO's Strategic Framework for sustainable agri-food systems.

Job Purpose

The Internship Programme offers a valuable learning opportunity for talented young women and men to supplement their academic knowledge with practical work experience within FAO. Interns will be assigned to various fields of work based on their individual profiles and the Organization's needs. This practical assignment allows them to contribute to FAO's mission and the broader UN 2030 Agenda, focusing on transforming agri-food systems for better production, nutrition, environment, and quality of life, ensuring no one is left behind. It's a chance to gain hands-on experience in a global context.

Responsibilities

Interns will undertake specific functions as outlined in the Terms of Reference (TOR) provided by the hiring office prior to the commencement of their assignment. These responsibilities are designed to align with the intern's academic background and the operational requirements of the FAO department. The tasks will offer practical exposure to FAO's work, contributing to ongoing projects and initiatives. Interns are expected to apply their skills and knowledge to support the organization's objectives, fostering a practical understanding of international efforts in food security and sustainable agriculture. This role emphasizes learning through doing and contributing to tangible outcomes.

Work Experience

No specific prior work experience is mandated beyond the educational requirements. However, candidates are expected to have relevant academic study in fields pertinent to FAO's mission. The internship itself is designed to provide practical work experience. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to adapt to an international, multicultural environment and possess good communication skills.

Skills

Key competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Candidates should possess relevant academic knowledge in fields related to FAO's work. Adherence to FAO Values (Commitment, Respect for All, Integrity, and Transparency) is essential. A working knowledge of at least one FAO official language is required, with proficiency in a second language considered an advantage.
